Web Services for Devices

For the 3rd time, the TeKoMed-Workshop will be held in Lübeck. This year it will be a two days event from 7th to 8th of November 2012. Objective of the workshop is the usage of Service-oriented principles in the domain of medical devices, mainly focusing on device integration in medical institutions like for example hospitals.  Of course, everybody is invited to participate! On October 17th, the International Workshop on Internet of Things Technology and Architectures (IoTech) was held in Valencia/Spain, co-located with the IEEE MASS conference. The objectives of the workshop read like the who-is-who of several WS4D efforts: IPv6, 6LoWPAN, RPL, CoAP, EXI , IEEE 802.15.4, IoT, WSN etc. So also WS4D joined the IoTech and presented the SOAP-over-CoAP approach. But you might find other things among the presentations.

The 6th IEEE International Workshop on Service Oriented Architectures in Converging Networked Environments (SOCNE) has been be held in conjunction with 16th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA’2011) in Toulouse, France, 05.  September 2011.

The scope of the SOCNE workshop is on not only on SOAs in general, but also on (resource constrained) device centric environments, including H2M and M2M scenarios. And of course the REST folk is welcome as well :).

The next ETFA 2012 will be held in Krakow/Poland. This is probably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and thus maybe also the venue for SOCNE 2012?!?!?!

WS4D-jCoAP is an implementation of the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) for Java. CoAP is an exciting emerging protocol defined by the IETF CoRE WG, which is a RFC – Proposed Standard. To put things short, CoAP is supposed to create an alternative to HTTP for RESTful APIs on highly resource-constrained devices. While HTTP usually bases on TCP, CoAP defines rudimentary reliability features so you can run it on UDP and therefore save a lot of protocol overhead that inherently comes with TCP.

Now that you have an idea of what CoAP is (if you hadn’t already) we want to share our latest efforts on implementing CoAP. Until now WS4D-jCoAP has grown to be a complete CoAP draft 18 implementation of the client and server side and it is still evolving.

The CeBIT 2011 is over and we proudly showed what is possible with the WS4D frameworks. An Pulse/SpO2 sensor using 6LowPAN and a remote controlled window live from the Embedded 2011 were the highlights.
We showed the total lineup from small devices using the uDWPS up to the newest App for Android using the JMEDS Stack.
PipesBox was used to control the window via a twitter API. That was awesome. Feel free to use our open source stacks and get infected by the web service idea and get curious for the CeBIT 2012.

In January, the Internet Architecture Board announced the ‘Interconnecting Smart Objects with the Internet Workshop‘ to be held in conjunction with the IETF80 in Prague. While the workshop requires a selection of participants, the additional held ‘Tutorial on Interconnecting Smart Objects with the Internet’ is open for everyone. WS4D will join both the workshop and the tutorial. So feel free to join the tutorial and meet the strange IETF folk in Prague!

Background: WS4D participates in the IETF mainly in the 6LoWPAN and CoRE working groups, published I-Ds about DPWS for 6LoWPAN and SOAP over CoAP and has developed WS4D-uDPWS, an Open Source DPWS stack for mote class devices.

This is nerdy! We will present our SpO2 sensor running WS4D-uDPWS over 6LoWPAN on an AVR Raven at Cebit 2011 in Hannover. Here is the preview:

Since the movement towards the Internet of Things and Smart Objects is gaining in momentum more and more, WS4D is proud to contribute to this field. Therefore an Internet Draft is published in the active IETF CoRE working group, describing an approach to bind SOAP to the CoAP protocol. Since CoAP is currently in draft state, the SOAP-over-COAP is it of course also. Nevertheless, contributions and feedback to the draft are more than welcome. The University of Rostock exhibits on the embedded world in Nürnberg (01.03. – 03.03.2011) and promotes WS4D technologies to overcome the problems of the heterogeneous hardware structure with advanced cross domain solutions. See the “Internet of Things” and make your first experiences with WS4D. We will present you:

• A complete overview about the WS4D technologies and its potentials for the creation of smart cross domain systems.
• Advanced software toolkits for WS4D development with C/C++ and Java.
• The WS4D-PipesBox tool for the easy graphical creation of device ensembles and service mashups.

We will demonstrate the power and  simplicity of WS4D in the domain of Home Automation (Smart Objects, digitalStrom).
